When Sardina was at the Sunday piled-up fruit and vegetable souk in Morocco, one of the street dogs was following her anywhere she went. She went to a piled-up potato and tomato vendor; the street dog went there, too. And now she walked to a piled-up watermelon vendor; again, he went there, too. The little street dog was shaggy, yellowish, skinny, and dirty. And he had a very long tail and scary white teeth. But Sardina thought she would wash him. She would feed him. And she would take care of him. At that moment, she named him Khelbee and took him home.

Khelbee did not stop wagging up and down his very long tail to show that he was very happy. After he was soaped and watered, dried, and fed. He looked very different, super clean, and happier. He barked for the first time since he was with her. She was very pleased to hear his first bark because that could be a sign of his good health, she thought.

One summer evening after dinner, Sardina was outside and left her apartment door slightly open because she thought she wouldn’t be outside for too long, just about five minutes or less. What it takes to buy a calling card from the store just on the other side of her street and come back. As she was handing out the money to the store owner, she heard many barks coming out of her apartment window.

“It must be something strange,” she murmured, “otherwise, Khelbee won’t bark like this.”

She snapped the calling card fast from the store owner’s hand, said thanks, and quickly ran. Khelbee was still barking aloud. At a corner near her apartment door, a long, dark snake was sitting ready to bite anyone who comes nearby. As she had seen it, she screamed and asked for help out loud, and in no time all the neighbors came.

“Bring a stout stick,” one said.

“Bring a metal bar,” another asked.

Sardina replied to them all, “Please don’t kill it; just make it go away.”

They all managed to let the long snake crawl toward the main street and then into the open field inside bushes and dead leaves. Everybody was talking about Khelbee, and Sardina was very proud of him; after all, he was the bravest Moroccan street dog ever who saved her.
