  • Zahra story

October, a couple years ago, at 11:45 AM on a Thursday morning, an international female student by the name of Zahra, originally from Kabyle, which is a region of Algeria, walks through the corridor in which teachers’ offices are. She walks to the last end of the wall holding her university book open at page 117, at which she intends to ask some questions she did not understand during the lecture of the morning. She wears a beautiful dress with a little bit of an open chest and short sleeves. She is a happy girl and always smiling. And when she reaches the teacher’s door, she knocks it and waits until she is allowed to ask her book-related question. The teacher, who is a white, tall man, well-suited, and of an age around 57, looks at her with a different eye. And when she voices her question, the teacher replies to her like this: “I can explain again that part of my lecture to you, but only if I touch your breasts.”

Zahra’s feet froze, her face turned pale, and she did not know what to do or say but left his office with many tears that filled her eyes for so long that day. She reported the misbehavior to the faculty staff of UofM, but nothing happened to the white French teacher. She told her mother, father, brothers, sisters, and friends, but they were unable to do anything. She could not quit the university in the middle of the school year, but she told her story to others and asked them NOT to send their girls to study abroad at this university.

  • Nuclear Energy

Have you ever wondered how people produce nuclear energy?

Stars, people, and everything else around us are all made of atoms. Atoms are tiny units that make up matter and are too small to be seen by the human eye alone. Although they are too small, they are very huge compared to the particles inside them.

The three main kinds of particles inside atoms are protons, neutrons, and electrons.

Protons and neutrons are in the center of an atom, the area that is called the nucleus, whereas the electrons are outside and orbit the nucleus billions of times per second.

Nuclear energy or atomic energy is created when changes occur in the structure of the nuclei of atoms. These changes are called nuclear reactions; in some nuclear reactions, a great deal of energy escapes from the nuclei. Energy created in a nuclear reaction is called nuclear energy, or atomic energy.

Some nuclear energy is produced naturally. For example, the sun and stars make heat and light by nuclear reactions. People can manufacture nuclear energy, too, using machines called nuclear reactors.

There are two ways that people produce nuclear energy. One way is called nuclear fission, and the other is called nuclear fusion.

In nuclear fission, the nuclei of atoms are split into pieces, and this releases the energy from the nuclei; this process is used in the atomic bomb and nuclear reactors.

The element uranium is the main fuel used to create nuclear fission. One reason why uranium is good though is that uranium nuclei can be split easily by shooting neutrons at them. Another reason is that once uranium is split, more neutrons are released, which can split other uranium nuclei.

Nuclear fusion is the other way to produce nuclear energy. It occurs when nuclei of atoms unite together or fuse under very hot conditions. The sun is one example where heat and light are created by nuclear fusion. Hydrogen nuclei fuse to make helium; during this process, matter is lost from the hydrogen nuclei that is turned into heat and light.

The most powerful destructive weapon on Earth also works by fusion. It is called the hydrogen bomb. The explosion of an atomic bomb attached to the hydrogen bomb provides heat to start fusion. Hydrogen nuclei fuse to form helium, and huge amounts of energy are released from hydrogen nuclei producing a huge explosion.

Nuclear explosions produce energy in the form of heat, light, and nuclear radiation. Materials produced during the explosion are capable of making nuclear radiation. These materials are called fallout when they fall back to Earth. Fallout harms the cells of the human body, and depending on the dose, the radiation in fallout can make people sick or even kill them.

So, nuclear energy is produced either by fission, meaning to split nuclei of atoms and release energy, or by fusion, meaning to fuse nuclei of atoms under very hot conditions and produce energy.

  • Gangsta Granny

Ben’s eyes darted towards the window. For a brief moment, he saw a dark figure wearing a strange hat peer through the dirty glass, then quickly disappear out of view.

“There was a man peering in at the window,” said Ben breathlessly.

“I know,” said Granny. “I told you not to look.”

“Shall I go out and see who it was?” said Ben, trying to hide the fact that he was more than a little frightened. Really, he wanted Granny to go out and see who it was.

“I bet you it was my nosy neighbor, Mr. Parker. He’s a retired Major, and now he runs the neighborhood Watch scheme.

    “What’s neighborhood watch?” Asked Ben.

“It’s a group of local people who keep an eye out for burglars. But Mr. Parker just uses it as an excuse to spy on everyone. The nosy old git. I often come back from the supermarket with my bag of cabbages and see he’s hiding behind his net curtains spying on me with a pair of binoculars.”

    “Is he suspicious about you?”

“Oh, he’s suspicious about everyone. We have to keep an eye out for him, young lad. The man is a menace.”

Ben went over to the window and peered out. He couldn’t see anyone.”

    BRING!!!!!

Ben’s heart nearly missed a beat. It was only the doorbell but if they let Mr. Parker inside he would see all the evidence the police would need to send Ben and his Granny straight to prison.

“Don’t answer it,” said Ben as he ran to the middle of the room and started stuffing all the jewels back in the tin as quickly as he could.

“What do you mean don’t answer it? He knows I’m at home. He just saw us through the window. You answer the door and I will hide the jewels.”

    “Me?”

    “Yes, you! Hurry!”

    BRING!

This ring was more insistent. Mr. Parker had left his finger on the buzzer for even longer. Ben took a deep breath and walked calmly through the hall to the front door. He opened it.

“Y-yes?” said Ben in a squeaky high voice.
    “C-c-can I help you?”

Mr. Parker put his foot inside the bungalow so the front door couldn’t be closed on him.
“Who are you?” He barked nasally.

He had a very big nose, which made him seem even nosier than he was, and he already seemed extremely nosy. Because he had a big nose, he also had a very nasal voice which made everything he said, how ever serious, seem a little bit absurd, but his eyes shone red like a demon.

“I’m um, I’m um Granny’s friend,” spluttered Ben.
“Why did I say that?” he thought. In truth, he was in a terrible panic and his tongue was running away with him.

“Friend?” Snarled Mr. Parker pushing open the front door. He was stronger than Ben and soon forced his way inside.

“I mean, I mean grandson, Mr. Parker sir,” said Ben retreating back towards the living room.

“Why are you lying to me?” he said. Taking several paces forward as Ben took several paces back. It was as if they were dancing the tango.

“I’m not lying!” cried Ben. They reached the living room door. “You can’t go in there!” yelled Ben thinking of the jewels still scattered all over the carpet.

    “Why not?”

“Um, um, um because Granny is doing her naked yoga.”

Ben needed a dramatic excuse to stop Mr. Parker barging through the door and seeing the jewels. He was pretty sure he’d hit the jackpot as Mr. Parker paused and furrowed his brow. Sadly, the nosy neighbor was not convinced.

“Naked yoga a likely story. I need to talk to your grandmother right away. Now, get out of my way, you nasty little worm of a boy,” he said as he shoved the boy aside and opened the living room door.

Granny must have heard Ben through the door because when Mr. Parker burst into the room she was standing in her bra and knickers in tree pose.

“Mr. Parker, do you mind?” said Granny in mock horror that he had seen her in a state of undress.
